10 Billion: The Stakes of Early Anthropic Investors Ahead of IPO
As Anthropic prepares for a public listing, early backers are sitting on multi-billion dollar gains based on the company's recent private valuation.

Nearly $10 billion is the current value of a single investor's stake in Anthropic, a figure that underscores the massive financial upside awaiting those who backed the artificial intelligence lab early. With the company's public listing expected later this year at a valuation that could reach $2 trillion, the stakes for both early and late-stage investors are set to skyrocket. Even before the initial public offering, the holdings of many venture capital firms and individual backers already total billions of dollars based on the firm's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion.
The wealth distribution among these backers varies significantly depending on when they entered the picture. Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, invested during the 2021 Series A round when the startup was valued at just $461 million. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt now owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that minority stake is worth nearly $10 billion, illustrating the dramatic appreciation since the startup's early days.
Later-stage investors have also seen substantial returns, though their entry points were far higher. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That massive bet has appreciated to a current value of $17 billion. If the company achieves its projected $2 trillion public valuation, Iconiq's position has the potential to double again. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested over $1 billion in total, a stake that is now worth $14 billion.
Sequoia Capital took a different approach, backing the AI lab for the first time only earlier this year when the valuation had already climbed to $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured about 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial investment in a relatively short period. This highlights how even recent entrants can capture significant value in a rapidly growing sector.
Individual and smaller firm backers have also seen exponential growth. Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company, resulting in a stake now worth billions. Notably, Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm. Meanwhile, Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in that same 2023 round when the valuation was $5 billion. That position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion.
These figures, sourced from Bloomberg, provide a snapshot of the wealth accumulation surrounding one of the leading AI labs. As Anthropic moves toward its public listing, the gap between early entry points and current valuations serves as a testament to the explosive growth of the industry.
